How To Door Hang 5,000 Of Your Business Coupon

by:Casen Doors     2020-09-09
If you own a small business, you may be aware of the surge in popularity of coupons.
It is in part, because of Groupon, which sends your coupon to an opt-in email list. Groupon is expensive, but it could rock your business. Another online variation is living social. The idea is that you put your city in the search and up comes coupons for your city. I don't know what it cost to participate as a business.
If you'd like a fresh idea that is online combined with off-line marketing, and puts YOU in control, this article is a quick read. Using your variation of the ideas expressed here could have your coupons in front of thousands of potential customers while you get paid well, to do it. Like the old song says - 'nice work if you can get it, and you can get it if you try.'
Let's say you have an iPhone, iPod, and iPad repair shop (for example). You would like to put your flyer, advertising your services on 5,000 doors in a radius around the shop.
A. Why do you want to do it?
You want to do it because unlike junk mail, the flyer doesn't have to be picked out of a pile of junk mail. Even in this high tech age, people still open their front door. The probability of actually getting impressions is higher than junk mail, an email blast, a text blast or a telemarketer. It is also considerably less offensive, and it is legal.
B. How should you prepare the flyer?
Let's imagine the flyer that will actually land on the front doors. It is a full 8.5' x 11' in a clear plastic bag which will be stretched over door knobs or tied on the loop-type front door handle. Plastic bags can be purchased at Wal Mart in many sizes. You want a thin bag but big enough so the flyer is able to be flat inside it. You want thin plastic so it will stretch and make a hole going over a conventional knob, and you want it long enough to easily tie around the loop style door handle. Obviously, the plastic bag has several advantages including being weather proof.
The flyer itself should be astro-bright yellow paper, with your message consuming one side except for one large sentence: 'More Coupons on the back!' On the back will be 16 rectangles, with each being a coupon from other businesses near you.
C. How does technology fit in this?
The header on the back will say, 'Please visit online at Covina Coupon for more coupons,' for example ( this is just an imaginary website). When they do visit, all the coupons on the flyer will be repeated, and there will be others. The visitor will be invited to join the email newsletter. Now, you and the other businesses around are growing a list you can email coupons to the future. Surely, some who join the email list will say something to some relative or friend, and the list will grow by referral, as well.
D. How can you do your 5,000 and get paid well, to do it?
It is you who set the whole thing up. You get yours for free, and remember, you also get the entire one side of the flyer. The 16 people on the back will each pay 1/16th of the cost of everything, including having the website built, and maintaining it. You will be doing some work, and you should get paid. The cost (outlined in item E) is about $3,000. 16 people paying $300 each is $4,800. You are going to make $1,800 while advertising your business. When was the last time advertising your business made you money?
E. What will it cost?
You should be able to do the flyers (both sides) for about 5 cents. If not, go on Craig's List and buy a used laser printer and toner and do them for 3 cents each. Anyway, let's say, $500 for paper, printing and prepping (bagging) for distribution. One hundred flyers an hour can be put on doors. 50 hours at $10 per hour or $500 for labor. Cost of website construction, $1000. Miscellaneous expenses, $1,000. The total is $3,000. Each of the 16 members will each pay at least $300 because where in the world can they get 5,000 coupons in front of people for $300? You can see, this could be profitable for you, while still being a steal of a deal for your members.
F. You decide IF and what you want to be paid.
It is important to keep it a good deal because you want to quickly sell 16 businesses on doing it, so don't get carried away with your profit. Here's the best part - because of the ongoing business, as the email list builds, and the potential for business into the future, the 16 members should be willing to pay a subscription of say, $59 a month for the ongoing maintenance, (someone has to send out the newsletter with up dated coupons as the thing continues, and grows). If you like that sort of thing, that 'someone' could be you.
Why will this work?
We all fell in love with the internet, and the net is amazing and fantastic. And now we are all aware of the net going local, with dozens of websites and online systems geared toward local, targeted marketing. Unfortunately, many are still too wide in their scope.
The above system feeds a big need. It combines the internet and offline marketing in a very focused market. It can be done in pods. A complete system could simply serve one large strip shopping center. Doing so could promote a feeling of 'one for all and all for one,' among the tenants. If the center has a vacant spot or two, get the landlord to participate by offering a free rent coupon. Have fun with it.
Is it too much work?
It may be for you. Please take a minute and re-read this if you can't see the potential of this AFTER the initial flyer (not to mention the impact on your business from the first flyer). Yes, if it works for the group, they'll want to do another 5,000. In fact, this is such a good a deal for each participant, you should end up with a waiting list, if you pitch this right. Maybe this is the seeds of a new business for you.
Imagine getting paid to set up 20 pods of 16 businesses each, selling them on their micro-local market development, and you would be paid $36,000 in initial monies. If each member of each pod paid $59 a month to maintain the pod website, build the money pool toward the next 5,000 flyer distribution, and to write the newsletter to the email list, that would be a monthly total coming in of over $18,000 coming in to you. Do you think there might be some monthly income for you in that $18,000 plus?
